The essay reconstructs the events connected with the presence of Ferdinand and Maria Carolina in Palermo, the capital of the Kingdom of Sicily, where they stopped in December 1798 after a journey full of obstacles. Although distant and only indirectly affected by the dramatic events surrounding the republican experiments, the city - suffering from the political emergency and the unstable military situation - lived in fear of a feared French invasion and in the fear of the simultaneous presence of Spanish and English Troops caused tension. In Plautus theatre there are two characters opposing to ‘comic’ love and his gallantry: they are the truculentus, characterized by rough wildness and by hostility to the female charm, and the rusticus, repulsive and unpleasant for his belonging to the country. The goat (hircus) symbolizes all this, identifying the invenustus amator par excellence, because of the bad smell. As for the topic of the olere, the comedies propose a series of common places, that become traditional and have a considerable synthesis at the ending part of the Casina: the disgusting lover is represented humorously like a stinking goat. Il contributo presenta brevemente due architetture ottocentesche presenti, ormai come frammenti isolati di una storia dalle trame ben più fitte e complesse, nell'area della Fossa della Garofala, sottolineandone l'interesse che, al di là delle caratteristiche dei due edifici e del loro "valore artistico", risiede precipuamente nel ruolo di testimonianza di una fase della storia urbana e culturale di Palermo in larga misura cancellata dalla speculazione edilizia.
